The United States is one of Germany's most important security partners, Minister de Maizière said ahead of the trip. Almost all cases where attacks in Germany were prevented involved good cooperation with the United States. Therefore, continuity and the willingness to maintain close cooperation on both sides remain important, even after the change in administrations.
Minister de Maizière met with Secretary Kelly on May 2, with both leaders stating that they want to continue the good cooperative working relationship between the Department of Homeland Security and the Interior Ministry and its security agencies. De Maizière also said they talked about new fields of cooperation, including cybersecurity.
Cybersecurity and especially defense against cyber attacks from foreign entities were at the top of the agenda for Minister de Maizière's meeting with Tom Bossert. The minister also met with Senator Ron Johnson, chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs.
